Dutch composer Henk Tromp's Clarinet Quartet is an outstanding addition to the clarinet quartet repertoire, at once both engaging and quite accessible for the young performer. There are some effective challenges for the intermediate ensemble, but no extreme demands on range; the work would be an effective addition to a recital program, and one or more movements could easily be selected for use in an ensemble competition at the high-school level. The piece is scored for 3 clarinets and bass clarinet (extended-range required.)
The three-movement work (Allegro, Adagio, Rondo) has a duration of approximately 12 minutes. Each movement features mixed meters, outstanding tight ensemble writing, and rhythmic challenges, without requiring virtuosity. There is outstanding use of dissonance, although within a very accessible musical language. For example, the final movement, after a lovely bass clarinet cadenza, ends with a rich major triad.
Mr. Tromp's Learning to Play the Clarinet, a three-book series, is available from Broekmans & Van Poppel, a prominent Dutch publisher.
Score: 26 pages, spiral bound; Parts: 7 pages each, staple bound.
Duo Alea began performing music for bass clarinet and piano in 1996. As both performers searching for new repertoire and teachers working with students eager to develop as performers, it quickly became clear that there was a need for more repertoire featuring the bass clarinet. Filling this need became the mission of Alea Publishing & Recording.
Since our first publication in 1997, the Bach Suites, the Alea catalog now includes over 250 titles. As performing musicians ourselves, we pride ourselves on the accuracy and quality of our sheet music, as well as our ability to ship directly to customers around the world.
We are proud of the diversity of our catalog in terms of the inclusion of works by composers and arrangers from around the world. We are interested in continuing to expand this diversity, representing musical ideas from around the world.
In June 2020, we announced the creation of the Dolphy Prize for new works for bass clarinet by Black composers.
