About the Music
Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) was an Italian composer of the Baroque period who spent much of his life in the service of the Spanish and Portuguese royal families. He composed a large catalog of works in a variety of musical forms, but today is primarily known for his more than 500 keyboard sonatas. While many of these one-movement sonatas are showpieces for keyboard technique, some, such as the Sonata K. 3, are wonderful examples of intricate Baroque counterpoint.
In this transcription for clarinet and bass clarinet duet, the range of the original work is maintained. The texture is one of imitative counterpoint throughout, and so the two parts are quite equal. The work features several chromatic passages and some wide leaps, but otherwise does not present any great challenges. An extended-range instrument is required for the bass clarinet to maintain the range of the original work, although this only comes into play in a few measures, so could easily be edited for a student without availability to such an instrument. The one-movement sonata, with two repeated sections, has a total duration of approximately 3-4 minutes. The work would make an excellent ensemble contest selection for intermediate students.
Extended-range instrument required for bass clarinet part. Duo score: 3 pages.

Kim Davenport
President
Duo Alea, the father-daughter duo of Michael and Kimberly Davenport, began performing music for bass clarinet and piano in 1996. As performers searching for new repertoire and teachers working with students eager to develop as performers, it quickly became clear that there was a need for more repertoire featuring the bass clarinet. Filling this need became the mission of Alea Publishing & Recording.
Since our first publication in 1997, the Alea catalog has now grown to include over 300 titles. We pride ourselves on the accuracy and quality of our sheet music, as well as our ability to ship directly to customers around the world.
We are proud of the diversity of our catalog in terms of the inclusion of works by composers and arrangers from around the world. We are interested in continuing to expand this diversity, representing musical ideas from around the world.
Following Michael's passing in 2019, Kim has taken over solo management of Alea Publishing. In 2020, Alea established the Dolphy Prize, an annual composition award for new works for bass clarinet by black composers.
