About the Music
Three Impressions for cor anglais (English Horn) and bass clarinet duo was composed in 2020 for the Hacha Duo, a student ensemble. Each of the three short movements - Tag, Sirens, and Resolute Jest - offers a different character, making for a diverse and interesting performance piece. With no great challenges of range or technique for either player, the work makes for an accessible performance piece for a college-level ensemble, or a lovely addition to a program for professional players.
Extended-range instrument NOT required for bass clarinet part. Score: 13 pages, spiral bound. Parts: 7 pages each, booklet.
About the Composer
Frederick Paul Naftel was born in Manchester, UK in 1956. He graduated from Manchester University in 1978 and received a Fellowship in Composition from Trinity College of Music, London in October 1980. Frederick's interest in composing began when he was fourteen and developed at University, where he specialized in this area. Although largely self-taught,he considers himself to be an "eclectic" composer, able to write in many styles and formats,as befits the occasion.
Compositions include 2 Concerti for Orchestra, 2 Symphonies and numerous chamber music works. "The Legend of Pandora", a ballet suite, was premiered in July 2017 and September 2018 saw the first performance of the "Double Concerto for 2 Tubas and Orchestra" ("From the Mountains and the Fjords"). Frederick is presently working on a Renaissance Dance Suite, Requiem for Female Choir and a Third Symphony.
Duo Alea began performing music for bass clarinet and piano in 1996. As both performers searching for new repertoire and teachers working with students eager to develop as performers, it quickly became clear that there was a need for more repertoire featuring the bass clarinet. Filling this need became the mission of Alea Publishing & Recording.
Since our first publication in 1997, the Bach Suites, the Alea catalog now includes over 250 titles. As performing musicians ourselves, we pride ourselves on the accuracy and quality of our sheet music, as well as our ability to ship directly to customers around the world.
We are proud of the diversity of our catalog in terms of the inclusion of works by composers and arrangers from around the world. We are interested in continuing to expand this diversity, representing musical ideas from around the world.
In June 2020, we announced the creation of the Dolphy Prize for new works for bass clarinet by Black composers.
