About the Music
One of the most prominent Czech composers of her generation, Ivana Loudová (1941-2017) was a member of the composition faculty of the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Prague for nearly three decades. Her early studies in Prague were with Czech composers Miloslav Kabelac and Emil Hlobil, and this was followed by work in Paris with Olivier Messiaen and Andre Jolivet. Her vast catalog of compositions includes works for orchestra, various chamber ensembles, solo instruments, and voice.
The Duo Concertante was composed in 1982 as a commission from the Dutch ensemble Duo Contemporaine (Henri Bok and Evert Le Mair). In addition to becoming part of that Duo's repertoire, the piece also intrigued the famous Czech bass clarinetist Josef Horák, Bok's teacher, who immediately after its completion premiered it with Emma Kovárnová (keyboard) in Biberach (Germany), and a year later played it with the marimbaphonist Miroslav Kokoska in Prague. The composer therefore dedicates the work to all of these musicians.
The one-movement, extremely concentrated and exacting composition affords both players the opportunity to shine in cadenzas, but also to join in gentle passages, where in certain registers the timbres of the very different instruments almost match or even blend. The work has a duration of approximately 10 minutes.
Extended-range instrument required. Score: 11 pages, spiral bound; Part: 4 pages, single sheet.

Kim Davenport
President
Duo Alea, the father-daughter duo of Michael and Kimberly Davenport, began performing music for bass clarinet and piano in 1996. As performers searching for new repertoire and teachers working with students eager to develop as performers, it quickly became clear that there was a need for more repertoire featuring the bass clarinet. Filling this need became the mission of Alea Publishing & Recording.
Since our first publication in 1997, the Alea catalog has now grown to include over 300 titles. We pride ourselves on the accuracy and quality of our sheet music, as well as our ability to ship directly to customers around the world.
We are proud of the diversity of our catalog in terms of the inclusion of works by composers and arrangers from around the world. We are interested in continuing to expand this diversity, representing musical ideas from around the world.
Following Michael's passing in 2019, Kim has taken over solo management of Alea Publishing. In 2020, Alea established the Dolphy Prize, an annual composition award for new works for bass clarinet by black composers.
