This site is home to Alea Publishing & Recording, specializing in music for the bass clarinet.
We offer a growing catalog of creative, artistic transcriptions and new works for bass clarinet solo & ensemble.
About the Work
Zealous (2014) is an outstanding performance piece for solo bass clarinet. The single movement work is a set of variations which explore the full range of the instrument. The piece includes moderate use of modern techniques such as flutter-tonguing, making it a good choice for the college-level student just beginning to explore these challenges in performance.
Extended-range instrument required. Solo score: 5 pages, loose-leaf.
About the Composer
Jered Kostenko is a composer and music educator on the Palouse, a unique swath of hill country in Eastern Washington known as 'America's Tuscany.' Since early childhood, Jered has found the Pacific Northwest to be an inspiring setting for musical creativity. He remembers his family (long ago) being part of the musical portion of their small town's state centennial celebration. Much of his young life revolved around music - whether weekly church music, his parents' in-home piano studio, or the daily hour-long lessons his father gave him - there never really was a break in the sound.
For Jered, creative inspiration derives not only from nature, but from family and the journey of life as experienced through the lens of faith. Jered's earlier works are predominantly for piano, but in later years he created pieces for small ensembles and wind symphony. Most recently, he has been occupied writing scripture songs and works for piano duo.
In addition to composing, Jered operates his own piano studio and serves as a collaborative pianist for the Washington State University School of Music. Other musical endeavors include arranging, engraving, events, and serving as the organist for one of Pullman's many churches.
Jered earned his Master's degree at WSU in 2013 with an emphasis in composition. During this time, he also made small research forays into the topics of performance practice and transformational theory. Life continues to present itself as a school for Jered today; brain and muscle are kept employed caring for a wife, two boys, and an extensive vinyl collection.
Kim Davenport
President
Duo Alea, the father-daughter duo of Michael and Kimberly Davenport, began performing music for bass clarinet and piano in 1996. As performers searching for new repertoire and teachers working with students eager to develop as performers, it quickly became clear that there was a need for more repertoire featuring the bass clarinet. Filling this need became the mission of Alea Publishing & Recording.
Since our first publication in 1997, the Alea catalog has now grown to include over 300 titles. We pride ourselves on the accuracy and quality of our sheet music, as well as our ability to ship directly to customers around the world.
We are proud of the diversity of our catalog in terms of the inclusion of works by composers and arrangers from around the world. We are interested in continuing to expand this diversity, representing musical ideas from around the world.
Following Michael's passing in 2019, Kim has taken over solo management of Alea Publishing. In 2020, Alea established the Dolphy Prize, an annual composition award for new works for bass clarinet by black composers.
