About the Music
This transcription of Faure's Elegie for bass clarinet sextet was commissioned by clarinetist Betty Bley. We thank Simon Parkin, for sharing these words about his arrangement:
The Faure Elegie exists in versions for cello and piano, and for cello and orchestra. The present arrangement is an adaptation of one I did for cello ensemble that appeared on Sheku Kanneh-Mason’s ‘Elgar’ CD. I really enjoyed exploring the soft, velvety richness of the bass clarinet ensemble, which is, I think, particularly well suited to this darkly expressive and beautiful piece.
Full score: 16 pages. Parts: 2 pages each. Extended-range instruments required for three of the six parts.

About the Arranger
Simon Parkin was born in Manchester. He went to the Yehudi Menuhin School at the age of 10 and trained there as a pianist. An early interest in composition was encouraged there, and at 17 Simon entered Manchester University and the RNCM as a composition student. Upon graduation he was invited onto the staff at RNCM, where he has taught a range of practically-based subjects including aural, improvisation, composition and arranging. He is now Deputy Head of Academic Studies at the RNCM. He has also taught improvisation and composition at both the Menuhin and the Purcell music schools.
Simon has developed his role as an accompanist/duo pianist, enjoying a comprehensive repertoire, and as well as his partnership with the ‘cellist Hannah Roberts he works regularly with artists such as Ralph Kirshbaum, and has performed with a range of international artists at festivals and in recital.. He is regularly invited as pianist for instrumental classes at IMS Prussia Cove, London Masterclasses and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Masterclasses, and has recorded a recital disk with violinist Detlef Hahn.
As an arranger, Simon is much in demand, and in addition to his role as Arranger in Residence for Manchester Camerata, for whom he produces arrangements in varied styles and for a range of ensembles his work has featured in the commercial recordings of international artists and ensembles including Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Jess Gillam and the Sakura Cello Quintet. The recently released number-one-selling CD 'Elgar' by Sheku contains 5 of Simon's arrangements, and he has more pending on future releases by Decca. He is now signed as an arranger to Faber Music Publishing. His content can be accessed via https://www.fabermusic.com/we-represent/parkin-sim...
Simon, who was awarded a PhD in composition by manchester University, is an award-winning composer with an extensive catalogue of performed works. His latest ongoing project is to compose a piece for every day of the year, for various instruments together with piano. Some of the 'December' pieces, for double bass and piano, were recently recorded by Leon Bosch on Meridian.
Simon is currently Director of Concerts for the Manchester Midday Concerts Society.
Kim Davenport
President
Duo Alea, the father-daughter duo of Michael and Kimberly Davenport, began performing music for bass clarinet and piano in 1996. As performers searching for new repertoire and teachers working with students eager to develop as performers, it quickly became clear that there was a need for more repertoire featuring the bass clarinet. Filling this need became the mission of Alea Publishing & Recording.
Since our first publication in 1997, the Alea catalog has now grown to include over 300 titles. We pride ourselves on the accuracy and quality of our sheet music, as well as our ability to ship directly to customers around the world.
We are proud of the diversity of our catalog in terms of the inclusion of works by composers and arrangers from around the world. We are interested in continuing to expand this diversity, representing musical ideas from around the world.
Following Michael's passing in 2019, Kim has taken over solo management of Alea Publishing. In 2020, Alea established the Dolphy Prize, an annual composition award for new works for bass clarinet by black composers.
